Today Poe’s short stories are lauded as masterpieces of fiction. “The Fall of the House of Usher” stands as one of Poe’s most popular and critically examined stories. Yet Flanagan predicted that, and thanks to the Poe connection, ‘Usher’ heads off in interesting directions. Not only that, but the clever use of different Poe tales for both the overarching theme and the separate stories is also effective –– it doesn’t come across as a splintered anthology series but functions as a whole.

Between Juno and Morella — two outsiders who married into the Usher family — there's proof that some good can come of the corrupt Usher dynasty.
